Hello, I'm Dr. Nina Medyk.
Welcome to my e-portfolio.
In this e-portfolio, you will find representations of my teaching philosophy and experiences alongside my professional interests and scholarship. I am currently a faculty member at the College of the Florida Keys (CFK) employed in my dream career. As corny as it sounds, it has been a goal of mine ever since I could remember to do my part in inspiring an “army” of positive change agents; leaving the world and people they meet a little better than they left them. Another goal of mine is to empower students to become the absolute best they can be, whether that means assisting students in alleviating barriers to their educational goals or advocating on their behalf. Working at CFK, has given me the opportunity to serve in a location I love with colleagues who truly care about student success.

TEACHING
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
-Nelson Mandela
I am forever grateful for the many educators in my own life who inspired and assisted me in overcoming barriers, challenged me to grow, and modeled passionate teaching. Because of these incredible individuals and my own personal goals, I view the role of professor as more than just a guide to a particular subject. Rather, as a professor I aim to do my best to galvanize a chain reaction of positive growth among students and the individuals they in turn interact with. I never want to take for granted the privilege it is to teach, and the opportunity awarded to me as a teacher to invest in the growth of my community and world.
Before beginning to teach, I like to focus on understanding students and forming positive relationships, so students feel comfortable asking questions and collaborating in discussions. I believe the primary roles of an educator are to engage students in the learning process, model professional relationships, inspire inquiry, and encourage students to become the best they can be. I am very much in favor of infusing the classroom with fun, experiential, and creative learning activities. I enjoy lecturing and structuring my classroom in a way that serves the diverse needs of students. My goals as an educator are to be innovative, challenging, conscientious, and compassionate. If students leave my class with new skills and resources, I’ve done my job. If students leave my class feeling motivated, confident, and appreciated for who they are, I’ve reached my goals.

To be an effective educator, I recognize it is my responsibility to continually learn and develop my skills by attending and presenting at professional conferences. I actively participate in professional development by attending a minimum of 2 professional conferences per academic year and various online trainings.
